A music video to mark one year of lockdown in the UK

“Ideas are immune and feelings forever
And you tell yourself it’s gonna get better
But you just don’t know.”

The young people from Future Proof have joined forces with Zest to reflect on a full year of living through the pandemic. With lyrics and visuals inspired by their COVID experiences and released exactly one year since the start of the first lockdown, Never Was a Normal captures the resilience of Gen-Z in a world of uncertainty.

Made remotely in Ashford, Barnsley, Frome, Brighton, Darlington, Guisborough, Hartlepool, Ladock, Lincoln, Liverpool, London, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Sittingbourne, Skelton, and Whitley Bay.

Lyrics

I want my liberty back
Time with the boys and to get on track
Let’s keep compassion, keep community
I WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
I WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

I need a break
Yeah I need him gone
I need a second chance
It’s been so long
I need intimacy and understanding
COZ I AM AN ENDLESS POSSIBILITY
AND I NEED SOME FUCKING ANSWERS

All we ever do is talk and listen
All we ever do is talk

In a box, in a box, in a box, in a box
And I lost my socks and friends and money
I want to keep immaculate style
Karaoke nights and self-control
Hanging with my bros on a nine-grand screen
I AM AN ENDLESS POSSIBILITY
I AM AN ENDLESS POSSIBILITY

I need to stop shouting
“I’M STEALING’ in the middle of a Greggs
But you can’t make an omelette
Without breaking some eggs
I know I need to accept my flaws
Maybe eat a little more
Still they ignore and they laugh
Then we fight and we win
And we’re still going in for some more
I WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
AND I NEED SOME FUCKING ANSWERS

All we ever do is talk and listen
All we ever do is talk
All we ever do is talk and listen
All we ever do is talk

And there never was a normal
How strange it is to be anything at all
Have you ever felt so small?

No I won’t forget it
I need to be ready for it all
I’ve seen so many numbers fall

Ideas are immune and feelings for ever
And you tell yourself its gonna get better
But you just don’t know
I just don’t know

I know you think you know we can do it
But there’s gotta be more than to just get through it
But you just don’t know
I just don’t know
