Exploring North East Lincolnshire’s heritage through the eyes of young people
Landmarks & Legends was part of Own Your Heritage, a youth-led programme co-created by Unseen Arts C.I.C. and The Culture House.
The programme invited children and young people across Grimsby and North East Lincolnshire to explore the stories that shape their place. From famous local buildings to the myths and moments passed down through generations, the project encouraged young people to reclaim their heritage through creativity, storytelling and collaboration.
Zest spent two days working with pupils at Macaulay Primary Academy to explore the landmarks and legends they feel connected to. Together, we researched local stories, uncovered the places that matter to them and explored how young people understand and experience North East Lincolnshire’s heritage. Building on this, pupils reflected on what they know about the past and how it makes them feel, creating writing focused on what they can shape for the future.
These ideas were then developed further with Year 10 drama students from John Whitgift Academy, who created and performed a short TED-style performance. The project culminated in a public showcase at Grimsby Minster on 31 January, where young people shared honest reflections on their place, exploring pride, frustration and the futures they want to see.
